About CeBIT 2002
|
CeBIT 2002 Hannover (Wednesday, 13 March to Wednesday, 20 March)
The ICT industry will be showing the flag at CeBIT 2002. When the world's number-one fair for information technology and telecommunications opens its doors from 13 to 20 March it will boast a record total of 8,152 exhibiting companies (2001: 8,093). The number of foreign exhibitors is also up on the previous year (3,210 as opposed to 3,059). This figure excludes a significant number of international market players who have signed up for CeBIT via their German-based subsidiaries. These factors combine to make CeBIT the largest single global marketplace for the ICT industry in 2002. The CeBIT exhibitors originate from 58 countries and will occupy 432,011 square metres of display space (2001: 431 875 sq. m. ). Germany heads the exhibitor league table, followed by Taiwan (555 exhibitors in 2002; 527 in 2001), the USA (512; 477) and the United Kingdom (364; 339). Deutsche Messe AG is pleased to report a sharp rise in the number of exhibitors from countries where Worldwide CeBIT Events now take place. Australia, for example, has extended its presence by an impressive 60 percent (42 exhibitors as opposed to 26 in 2001). The number of Turkish exhibitors has increased more than three-fold – from 10 to 35. Finally, 104 exhibitors from the People's Republic of China have registered for CeBIT 2002, as compared with a mere 25 in 2001. The number of German exhibitors has declined marginally – from 5,034 to 4,942. This is due largely to the streamlining of the range of exhibits in line with the current market situation. Some 130 companies have been affected by these changes.
In its role as the world's no. 1 ICT fair, CeBIT traditionally boasts an outstanding line-up of speakers at the opening ceremony. The keynote speaker at CeBIT 2002 will be Steve Ballmer, President and CEO of the Microsoft Corporation, Redmont, USA. The German ICT industry will be represented by Dr. Volker Jung, President of the Berlin-based German Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media (BITKOM). CeBIT will be officially opened by the German Chancellor, Gerhard Schröder.
Every year hundreds of thousands of ICT professionals come to CeBIT to tune into the latest trends, forge business relationships and prepare the ground for important investment decisions. Major structural modifications have now been implemented in order to make CeBIT even more transparent, concentrated and visitor-friendly than in the past. This new structure creates greater scope for the core product categories as well as for extensive contacts between exhibitors and visitors. It also allows the hall allocations to be adapted flexibly in line with changing market requirements. A further significant modification will take effect in 2002: CeBIT will take place from Wednesday to Wednesday, i.e. over a period of eight days as opposed to seven. Occupying a total of 27 exhibition halls, CeBIT 2002 will feature three core display categories, six sub-categories, eight themed joint presentations, plus six "Exchanges" focusing on key issues relating to the ICT industry. In addition, numerous forums and corporate presentations will provide the necessary theoretical background. At CeBIT 2001 these lectures reached 40,000 registered visitors. CeBIT is therefore not only the world's biggest trade fair but also the world's biggest congress for the ICT industry.
CeBIT’s new thematic structure is mirrored by a clear and logical layout of the Exhibition Grounds. The northern section of the grounds is now devoted to information technology, the western section to software, and the south-western section to telecommunications. In the past, exhibitors of "Information Technology" had been located at different venues spread around the grounds. As of 2002, they will be grouped together in the halls at the northern end of the Grounds. "Software, Internet Solutions & Services" will be located in a unified chain of halls on the eastern side of the Grounds. Last but not least, the "Telecommunications & Networks" exhibitors will be housed in a group of halls (including the newly constructed Hall 27) in the south-western corner of the grounds. The other display categories at CeBIT 2002 are as follows: "Automatic Data Capture, Vision Systems & Voice Processing", "IT Engineering Solutions", "IT Security & Card Technology" and "Banking Technology & Financial Services". With effect from 2002 "Research & Technology" will be renamed "Future Parc – Business Meets Research & New Technologies". The CeBIT Job Market (Hall 10) will be making its third successive appearance at CeBIT Hannover. Subtitled "Jobs in the ICT Sector", this special event will provide a central platform where companies and staffing agencies can present their current array of employment opportunities. The emphasis will also be on ICT-related job profiles and future labour market trends.
CeBIT 2002 will also feature several group presentations devoted to key issues affecting the ICT industry. The "World of Solutions" and the "Internet Park" in Hall 6 will look at new software products and their potential applications in the area of e-business. Located in the pavilions next to Hall 11, "enac europe" will focus on software solutions for central government, local government and the business community. The "Powerline Center" in Hall 12 will investigate the possibilities for communicating via the electricity supply network. The "Network Information Center (NIC)" in Hall 15 highlights the latest trends and applications in computer networking. IT security issues will be on the agenda at CefIS – Center for Information Security" in Hall 17. "Bank-Finanz-Systeme" in Hall 18 is targeted at professionals from the financial services industry, while "Equity World" (also located in Hall 18) will bring together investors and ICT companies that are seeking to raise capital.
In future, special display areas at CeBIT will be set aside for the "hot issues" in the ICT industry. The content of the so-called "Exchange Stands" will be adapted from year to year in line with the changing market situation. At CeBIT 2002 the line-up will be as follows: "Linux Exchange" in Hall 3, "SATCOM Exchange" in Hall 12, "DSL Exchange", "Bluetooth Exchange" and "WiFi Exchange" in Hall 13 as well as "Fibre Channel Exchange" in Hall 16.
